Note: During your FIRST PLAYTHROUGH of Dragonflight, YOU MUST COMPLETE THE CAMPAIGN! Even without the presence of a Covenant/Azerite system in Dragonflight, you'll still need to finish this questline to unlock endgame content. However, this route is still extremely fast just for reaching level 70, and aims to complete the minimum amount of side quests needed to hit Level 70 right around the time the Campaign is finished.
Where/How to Start Dragonflight
- If you didn’t complete the questline during the Dragonflight pre-patch, you’ll first be directed to Ebyssian in Orgrimmar or Wrathion in Stormwind. They’ll task you with flying around your respective capital city in order to gather NPCs for your faction’s expedition. Both quests take roughly 2 minutes to complete, and the Orgrimmar one will direct you towards the zeppelin tower outside of the city, while the Alliance questline directs players towards the Stormwind Docks.
- Once you arrive at the tower or docks, an NPC standing nearby will display a timer that indicates how long it will take for the next ship to arrive. After picking up the next quest here, simply wait around for the Dragon Isles Zeppelin/Boat to arrive.
- Upon loading into the Dragon Isles, you'll spawn far out in the ocean, and the ship takes roughly one minute to reach the shoreline. You could wait, but if you're an Evoker, or if you're leveling an alt that already has Dragonriding unlocked, you can use Soar/Dragonriding to quickly zip to shore.
Waking Shores (Levels 60-63)
Waking Shores Map Guide: https://imgur.com/a/eww14sX
- Step 1: After landing on the shore, complete quests until you're directed to the Wingrest Embassy. For the initial quests, you should take absolutely 0 detours for treasures, rares, or side quests. Your primary goal early on should be to gain a lead on everyone else.
- Step 2: There are a few exceptions for side quests once you reach Wingrest Embassy. The quests involving Sendrax have a lot of long, unskippable RP, so you should complete a FEW side quests while the dialogue plays out. These side quests are “Give Peace a Chance” and “From Such Great Heights”.
- If I did not mention a side quest by name, DO NOT COMPLETE IT! The other ones will end up taking you too long to complete, so it's better to wait around for Sendrax to finish her RP.
- Step 3: You will continue to follow the Campaign Questline (and ONLY the Campaign Questline) until you reach Scalecracker Keep. Within this area, you can kill the rare mob Dragonhunter Igordan while finishing the other campaign quests. Dragonflight rares are easy to kill and give solid experience, so they're worth fighting if they don't require taking a significant detour.
- You should also complete the bonus objective within this area, provided it isn't too overcrowded. As a rule of thumb, you should ALWAYS complete any nearby bonus objectives unless my guide EXPLICITLY tells you not to do so.
- Step 4: While completing the quest to heal red drakonids, you can stop and complete the “Fighting Fire With… Water” side quest at the nearby cave, since it's fast and directly along the path.
- Step 5: When you reach the Life-Binder Conservatory subzone, keep an eye out for the rare Firava the Rekindler which patrols around the area. You should fight and kill him for bonus experience.
- Step 6: On the quest where Sendrax finally stops talking, using any movement items will cause you to drop the dragon egg. The one exception to this is Gunshoes, which you can use ahead of time before picking up the egg, allowing you to quickly zip your way over to the turn in point. Ignore the nearby side quest “A Two for One Deal”, as it takes too long to complete for the amount of experience it gives.
- Step 7: Upon reaching the Ruby Life Pools, speak to Lifecaller Tzadrak and set your hearthstone there. This will be important later.
- Step 8: Around this time you'll unlock Dragonriding, so I'm going to quickly discuss glyphs. Contrary to what many people have been parroting, it is NOT efficient to grab all of the glyphs before continuing the campaign. In fact, I would go so far as to say that this is a COLOSSAL waste of time and will make your Day 1 experience significantly worse. If you want to get every glyph, the best time to do this is immediately after finishing the campaign on your first character.
- While leveling, you'll want to grab a maximum of 7 Dragonriding Glyphs, and you should only pick one up if it's directly along your path. Your first glyph is mandatory and will give you access to four vigor, but the other six are optional. If you choose to grab them, you can learn Dynamic Stretching and Thrill Chaser, which slightly improve your vigor regeneration. This is such an insignificant bonus that I won't even bother pointing out the locations of Dragonriding Glyphs. If you see one nearby, grab it. If you get 3, buy one of the aforementioned talents for an extremely minor bonus.
- Step 9: After finishing the quests at Skytop Observatory and interacting with the Dragon ferry for the quest, you can use your hearthstone to quickly return to the Ruby Life Pools.
- Step 10: Within the next area, you can find two rare mobs, Terillod the Devout and Klozicc the Ascended. Make sure you kill them while completing the Campaign quests.
- Step 11: When you reach Obsidian Bulwark, speak to Tong the Fixer to set your hearthstone again. Note that this next Hearthstone skip will only be possible if you're in a guild, as it won't be back up in time without the 15 minutes Hearthstone CDR.
- Step 12: Upon reaching the quest “Taking the Walls”, you should only fly on Wrathion's back only for the initial flight onto the ramparts. It's significantly faster to travel to other ballistae by using Dragonriding.
- Step 13: After receiving the quest “Black Wagon Flight”, you can use your hearthstone to quickly return to Obsidian Bulwark. While completing this quest, make sure to stay close to the cart at all times. Sabellian is very skittish and refuses to move ahead if you stray too far.
- Step 14: After completing a few more quests at the Ruby Life Pools, Alexstrasza will direct you towards Ohn’ahran Plains.
Ohn’ahran Plains (Levels 63-66)
Ohn’ahran Plains Map Guide: https://imgur.com/a/ZIUZD44
- Step 1: Shortly after entering Ohn’ahran Plains, you’ll reach a quest hub called Timberstep Outpost. While here, pick up and complete the side quests “Sole Supplier” and “Thieving Gorlocs”. Complete all of the follow-up quests in this chain until you return to Timberstep Outpost. Ignore the side quest “Nergazurai”, as it isn’t efficient.
- Step 2: When completing the quest “Connection to Ohn’ahra”, which tasks you with gathering duck feathers, make sure that you right click on the ducks to pluck the feathers, rather than killing them outright.
- Step 3: Upon reaching Maruukai, complete the side quest “Orientation: Maruukai”, as it's extremely fast and efficient.
- Step 4: After you reach the town of Teerakai, set your hearthstone here by speaking to Hearthkeeper Atahl. Within this town, pick up the quests “Up to No-khud” and “WANTED: Mara’nar the Thunderous”.
- Step 5: Shortly after the campaign directs you to leave Teerakai, you should complete “Up to No-khud” along with the immediate follow up quest, “Return to Mender”. All other quests in this chain should be skipped, as they’re not efficient.
- Step 6: When you’re told to complete quests in Ridgewater Retreat, keep an eye out for the rare Eaglemaster Niraak and make sure to kill her for a chunk of bonus experience.
- Step 7: Similarly, when you reach Windsong Rise, make sure to kill the rare Prozela Galeshot.
- Step 8: During the quest “With the Wind at Our Backs”, you’ll be told to take a flight on a green dragon named Gerithus. However, you get full credit for the flight the moment you hop on his back, so you can quickly dismount aftwards. If you have a Falling Flame, you should use it here to shoot yourself to the western side of the zone. If you don’t have a Falling Flame, just use Dragonriding. You’ll want to aim for the quest objective of “WANTED: Mara’nar the Thunderous”, and you should land just short of that area in order to kill the rare Skaara. From here, fly down the nearby cliff and kill Mara’nar to finish the aforementioned quest. You can now proceed to Shady Sanctuary to continue the campaign.
- Step 9: While in Shady Sanctuary, speak to Gracus and complete the entire quest chain starting with “Some Call Me Bug Catcher”.
- Step 10: A bit southwest of this area you’ll find the Lilac Ramble subzone. Complete the entire quest chain starting with “Find Theramus”, and kill the two rares Ripsaw the Stalker and Territorial Coastling.
- Step 11: After completing the quest “Starve the Storm”, take a detour to the back of the cave to kill the rare Ty’foon the Ascended.
- Step 12: When completing the final quest of the zone, “Renewal of Vows”, you’ll have to pick the correct dialogue options out of a list of three. The right answers are “a trophy from her first hunt”, “an eagle feather”, and “offer blood”. After completing this quest, you should use your hearthstone in order to return to Teerakai. While here, make sure to hand in the quest “WANTED: Mara’nar the Thunderous”, and then fly towards the next campaign quest.
The Azure Span (Levels 66-69)
Azure Span Map Guide: https://imgur.com/a/vTjK5W6
- Step 1: At the start of Azure Span, you'll be directed towards Camp Antonidas. On your way there, stop at Khuri’s Fishing Spot and complete the side quest chains for “Arcane Detection” and “WANTED: Gorger”. Ignore the quest that tells you to fish.
- Step 2: After completing the initial campaign quests in Camp Antonidas, pick up and complete the side quests “WANTED: Frigellus” and “Setting the Defense”. You can also grab the breadcrumb quest “Path to Nowhere”, which you might hand in later.
- Step 3: When completing quests in the Azure Archives, take a slight detour to kill the nearby rare mob, Forgotten Creation. Before leaving the area, you should also speak to Vel Tal IX to set your hearthstone here.
- Step 4: Follow the campaign until you reach Iskaara. Within this town, you’ll be completing the following quest chains: “WANTED: Krojek the Shoreprowler”, “Scampering Scamps”, “Orientation: Iskaara”, “The Weave of a Tale”, “Nook News”, and “Rowie”.
- Step 5: The quest “Nook News” is a breadcrumb that directs you towards the Whaler’s Nook subzone. While here, you should complete the questline up until you reach “No Dwarf Left Behind”. Upon reaching this quest, abandon the subzone and return to Iskaara.
- Step 6: When you receive the campaign quest “Azure Alignment”, you should take a short detour to the Falling Water subzone, which can be found on the northwestern edge of the zone. Complete every single quest within this subzone. Once you’re finished, you can use your hearthstone to return to the Azure Archives.
- Step 7: The campaign will then immediately direct you to Rhonin's Shield, which is on the far eastern end of Azure Span. You should ride your dragon to get there, and upon arriving, pick up the side quests “Drakes be Gone” and “Riders in the Snow”. Complete the former quest first, as it's extremely fast. The latter quest will direct you towards a new subzone. If you're already super close to Level 69, you can simply continue along the campaign, but otherwise you should take a short detour to complete this side quest chain.
- Step 8: During the quest “Primal Power”, you'll need to fight a bunch of really nasty caster mobs. Do not overpull in this area, as it's extremely easy to get yourself killed. In this area you can also find the treasure Simmering Chest, and you should pick it up for a bit of bonus experience.
- Step 9: When you're directed to return to the Azure Archives once again, use your hearthstone if it's no longer on cooldown. If it is, you can fly to Rhonin's Shield and use the flight path to quickly return.
- Step 10: At this point the campaign will direct you towards Valdrakken. To get there quickly you should use your Dalaran Hearthstone in order to portal hop to Orgrimmar/Stormwind. From here, take the nearby portal to Valdrakken.
- If you're level 69, then congratulations, because you're officially done with (most) side quests, and you can generally just follow the campaign at this point. If you're missing experience, you should stay in Azure Span for a bit longer.
- Step 11: The best subzones to quest at if you're missing experience are Camp Nowhere in the south, Lost Ruins in the east, and Theron’s Watch in the northeast. Most of these questlines are straightforward, so I won't provide any additional notes. Just keep an eye out for rare mobs while you quest, and you can stop the moment you reach level 69.
Thaldraszus (Levels 69-70)
Thaldraszus Map Guide: https://imgur.com/a/kT8DFNe
- Step 1: Within Thaldraszus you'll be completing the bare minimum amount of side quests. While doing the campaign in Valdrakken you should only complete “Orientation: Valdrakken”, as it's extremely fast and can be done alongside the campaign quests. You should speak to Tithris in order to set your hearthstone to Valdrakken. This city is the main hub for the expansion, so you’ll likely be coming back here a lot.
- Step 2: When completing quests at the South Hold Gate, fly to the top of a nearby tower to kill the rare Lookout Mordren.
- Step 3: While completing campaign quests within the Flowing Forest, kill the rare mob Henlare, which can be found at the top of a nearby hill.
- Step 4: At some point along the campaign, you’ll reach the Primalist Future subzone. In order to complete the quest “Making Time”, you should avoid killing any of the elite mobs in this area, as they’re tuned around max level players with higher ilvl gear. The intended way to complete this quest is to kill the non-elite elemental adds scattered around the zone.
- Step 5: After you kill Murloc Deathwing, you can immediately exit your vehicle and turn in the quest. Waiting for the RP to finish is not necessary.
- Step 6: In the Black Empire subzone, you’ll need to reach the opposite end of Ny’alotha to hand in a quest, but the path to get there is covered with mobs. You COULD just press gunshoes and attempt to speed past all of these mobs, but if you have a Darkmoon Cannon, this is a great opportunity to use it. Simply launch yourself across the gap and use a goblin glider kit in case you don’t get enough distance.
- Step 7: Once you’ve finished the Chromie questline and hearthstoned back to Valdrakken, you’ll have fully completed the campaign. At this point, all of the endgame content will be unlocked, and Adventure Mode will be available as an option for your future alts.
- If you somehow haven’t reached level 70 at this point, you should complete random side quests in Thaldraszus and Azure Span.
- Alternatively, if you have a decent amount of gold, you can make up the difference by leveling up a profession. I generally wouldn't recommend doing this for your first playthrough, but if you want to learn more, it's discussed within the Adventure Mode Guide.
